If you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings like us, you know that all of the movies were filmed on location in New Zealand. And as one does not simply walk into New Zealand, when you find yourself on the island you must visit the closest place to utopia we may ever see.

Just outside of Matamata is Hobbiton, the world’s most iconic film set built on a section of farmland first spotted by director Peter Jackson by helicopter during pre-production of Lord of the Rings. We booked the “Second Breakfast Tour” which included a pint of ale at the Green Dragon Inn (or two if you ask nicely) and a gourmet breakfast spread worthy of the classiest of hobbits, eaten at the Mill House. We also rolled our Dungeons and Dragons dice in front of the Baggins estate for a wee bit of luck, and pet the local cat, Pickles!
