After Lake Taupo we continued on to the cute seaside town of Napier. Napier is renown for its art deco architecture - a result of the town being entirely rebuilt following a severe earthquake in 1931.

Napier is also home to the National Aquarium of New Zealand. As a birthday present, Dylan got us tickets to their “Little Penguin Experience,” where we got to feed lunch to the Aquarium’s flock of little blue penguins! The handler, Bix, described one of the birds, Dora, as “a penguin who sees herself more as a human than as a penguin”. True to her description, Dora continued to hang with us even after all the fish were distributed. Other museum highlights included Terry the sea turtle and seeing our first full-grown kiwi!
